Traveling, the basic human activity that many enjoy and wish they could do more often. If you're here it's probably because you want to find out how what is Worldpackers and how it can help you get free (yes, FREE) accommodation anywhere in the world. Well, you're in the right place as I'll let you know all about this platform and how you can make the most out of it for your next long or short-term trip.
What is Worldpackers?
Worldpackers.com is an online platform that offers volunteering opportunities around the world for travelers 18 and over. You can find different kinds of experiences at hostels, eco farms, homestays, communities, and NGOs among others, and the destinations go from Brazil and Costa Rica to Italy and Spain.
How does it work?
It's easy, to use Worldpackers and have the chance to find hundreds of travel volunteering opportunities in order to get free accommodation you only have to create an account, pay the yearly volunteer membership, and start applying to any listing of your choice.
Once you contact the host and get pre-approved you'll have to confirm your stay which is essential so the WP team can grant you access to all the security features they offer. This will also allow you to leave and receive reviews at the end of your trip.
Is Worldpackers safe?
By registering and paying the yearly fee Worldpackers has your back, it offers support before, during, and after your trip, they have Worldpackers insurance which can cover the cost of emergency stays in case something doesn't go as planned with a host, and you can also contact other travelers who have previously volunteered on your desired listing.
Now, when it comes to safety during the volunteering experience that may vary from host to host and destination. I used the platform once 3 years ago to volunteer at a hostel and the manager and the volunteer team were respectful and overall good to be with, but there was a low-key unsafe environment due to some of the hosts who were sketchy or some who were constantly under drug or alcohol abuse, and there was a slight evident racism towards a Mexican volunteer couple.
Please note that this doesn't mean all travel volunteering experiences are like this, what I'm trying to say is that some environments or staff members may not be the best match for you, but if that's the case you can always reach out to the Worldpackers for help and switch accommodation. An important and useful feature of the platform is that you can also check reviews from previous volunteers.
