This destination located in the state of Guanajuato is a colonial-style city where you'll find baroque architecture, colorful streets, and a prosperous art and food scene. Also known as San Miguel, this warm and artsy location is home to hundreds if not thousands of ex-pats from over the world as it's a very calm and lovely place to live. The most iconic and popular spot here is the stunning cobblestone neo-Gothic church that lies in the historic center and rises tall with its towers.
San Miguel de Allende is the perfect place to vacation in Mexico or even stay for a couple of months if you're an art enthusiast. The different art galleries, events, workshops, and exquisite restaurants along with its other unique features make it one of the best places to visit in Mexico.
2. Campeche - Campeche
Campeche is an underrated destination, not only do foreigners ignore its existence but many Mexicans also have no idea that it's actually a good place to vacation in Mexico.
Campeche City - the capital of the state - is not only that but also a former port in the Mexican Gulf full of baroque colonial buildings, military architecture, and a walled downtown district, yes, you read that right, a walled downtown! Since this was a port back in the colonial era, Campeche was often invaded by pirates who looted the city, that's why they had to build a fort.
Campeche is often overlooked because you hardly ever read something about it online or hear someone talking about how amazing was their trip there, but this small holiday spot has many wonderful experiences to offer. There are different nice, affordable, and good hotels in the downtown area where you can stay, this is a great choice as you'll be able to walk around the city center at any time of the day. This main area is fully walkable and also features different restaurants, bars, and boutiques where you'll be able to enjoy a drink, some delicious local plates, or get some souvenirs. Another highlight of Campeche is that you can hop on a cab, rental car, or tour van to get to one of the state beaches like Playa Bonita, or the ones further along the state's coast. The rich history, one-of-a-kind architecture, food, and ambiance make Campeche a great travel destination.
3. Puebla City - Puebla

About 3 hours away from Mexico City is Puebla, another colonial capital that you must visit. This city is well-known for its culinary history and delicious dishes, colonial architecture, and pottery, and it's also the place where the famous 5 de Mayo Battle took place.
The spectacular Puebla downtown is one where you'll immerse yourself in history, and tradition and it'll even make you feel as if you were visiting Europe. The old buildings, the Zócalo, old newsstands, street musicians, traditional food, and amusing streets are the perfect setting for a historic and enjoyable throwback. Around here you'll also find some museums like the Museo Amparo, art galleries, and historic tourist spots such as the Biblioteca Palafoxiana, and of course the renowned Puebla Cathedral, and so on.
Located about 15 minutes away from the Puebla Centro are also Angelopolis and Cholula. The first is a contemporary area where you can visit trendy malls, restaurants, and other spots, and you can also tour the Museo Barroco, which hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions. In Cholula, you'll discover a whole different vibe compared to the downtown and Angelopolis areas, this small town encompasses the Great Pyramid of Cholula -the largest pyramid on earth by extension- along with its archaeological zone, different parks, and tons of cozy shops, restaurants, and bars. If you're looking for a place to visit in Mexico with a wide cultural offer Puebla is an ideal pick.

If you consider yourself more like a beach enthusiast then you'll surely enjoy Playa del Carmen.
This gorgeous coastal town found in Quintana Roo along the Yucatán Península strip in the Mayan Riviera is a popular attraction due to its beautiful beaches with palm trees, coral reefs, and marine fauna, and also its pleasant weather, and lively night scene. Playa del Carmen is only located around 30 minutes away from Cancun and Tulum, therefore you can go on day or short trips to any of those at any time if you choose PDC as your main destination. Playa del Carmen's downtown harbors a famous park, Parque Fundadores, its very own iconic Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), the Playa del Carmen Beach, the Muelle Constituyentes, and the famous club chain Coco Bongo.
A plus of Playa del Carmen is that you can also take a ferry to Cozumel, a gorgeous and pristine island where travelers can scuba dive, sail, or enjoy other water sports in addition to laying under the sun. Playa del Carmen's predominant population is the youth, but there are visitors and locals of all ages and even nationalities.

La Paz is another lesser-known destination despite its proximity to Los Cabos. This beach town is the capital of the state and is well-known across the country for its beaches, parks, and art scene where Mexican and international artists flourish.
This Western destination presents relaxing hotels, local shops, bars, and beautiful architecture, but what stands out the most is without a doubt its natural wonders. Breathtaking areas like Playa Balandra, Playa Pichilinque, Playa el Tesoro, and the Cerro de La Calavera are some of the city's natural gems, and other spots like the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de La Paz or the boardwalk Malecón La Paz are excellent tourist attractions. This charming Baja town is one where you'll find peace, beauty, and unique destinations.
